The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
