No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
